Adobe Photoshop (Elements) is a graphics editor for photographers, image editors and hobbyists. It contains most of the features of the professional version but with fewer and simpler options. The program allows users to create, edit, organize and share images. It is a successor of Adobe Photoshop (Limited Edition).[1]
Originally introduced alongside Adobe Photoshop version 6, Photoshop Elements targets photography enthusiasts and thus lacks many features that make it useful in a proper print production environment.[1] For example, Photoshop Elements cannot export files in the CMYK color mode, supports a simplified color management system, and excludes detailed soft-proofing. Photoshop Elements is a cut down version of the professional package. This means you get fewer tools and features, but it’s also a fraction of the cost. It also means that the features have been simplified, making it easier to use. If you’re an amateur enthusiast, then the chances are good that this programme will suit you down to the ground. It occupies the middle ground between the pricey professional software and the freebie programmes. What this means is that you’ll get pretty slick tools without having to break the bank.
Pros: One of the best new additions is the guided edits feature. This is hugely helpful, especially for those who are new to this kind of software. The guide will take you through the various enhancements you can make to improve your photo. Because it’s done step by step, it means that you don’t have to learn all of the ins and outs of the programme first.
Cons: If you’re an advanced user, then you may get frustrated because Photoshop Elements offers fewer features than its big brother. It’s also worth advanced users being aware that this programme won’t deal with RAW images.
Conclusion: Photoshop Elements is a mid-priced package with a good variety of features which makes it ideal for the amateur enthusiast. It’s not the cheapest programme, but its helpful guided edits do make it a worthwhile investment.
